Château Chevreuil — the château across the lawn

Château Chevreuil

Pays de Retz — Atlantic Loire

Venue N° 03 — The Collection

Fifteen minutes from the Atlantic and half an hour from Nantes, Chevreuil sits in the Marais breton, historically part of Brittany. It is a private house rather than a venue. A kilometre back from the nearest road, inside a hundred acres of walled woodland, there are no neighbours and there is no noise.

The place

A 14th-century domain, the château restored for comfort in the 18th century, set a kilometre back from the nearest road inside a hundred acres of walled woodland. The woodland is dense and the estate is genuinely secluded. Roe deer are common guests, which is how the house got its name. There are no neighbours.

The château itself holds four en-suite bedrooms — eight guests, twelve with extra beds — a library with a grand piano, a drawing room, and the original dining hall, which seats thirty-two. A heated private pool, fourteen metres by seven, opens from May to mid-October. There is an internal lift and the bedrooms sit on the ground floor. Booked on its own, the estate is still yours: the gates are closed, the woods are yours, and there is nobody else on the property.

The owner knows the history of the house and will tell you about it, which is not a thing you can book.

"The silence is the first thing you notice and the thing couples remember."

The house and the estate

The dining hall, the drawing room, the blue salon, the bedrooms, the library — and the estate from above.

The wedding here

The ceremony takes place on the lawns or the terrace. Dinner is seated indoors in the hall, thirty-two, or outdoors on the terrace, fifty, weather permitting. There is no indoor room for fifty, so an outdoor dinner needs a wet-weather plan, and I will build you one before you sign anything.

If your guest list is longer, the estate adds two more houses, taken in order as you need them. La Canardière, the poolside guest house, brings eight more beds and a second dining room seating forty. Maison des Vignes, the gatehouse, adds the rest, to twenty-five sleeping on site in all. Seated capacity does not change with the houses: thirty-two in the château hall, forty in the Canardière, fifty outdoors, whichever combination you take. There are no restrictions on music or hours.

The hall in the château is the room people come for, and it seats thirty-two. I would rather you kept the list to that and filled the houses with the people who matter most.

"It suits couples who want a long weekend rather than a single day."

The region

The Atlantic, fifteen minutes away.

Some couples come to disconnect completely and never leave the gates. Others use the estate as a base: the Atlantic beaches, Pornic bay and fifty-two kilometres of coastline, the salt marshes by bicycle, the vineyards inland. Either way the wedding becomes a weekend of discovery.

A note from Lemon & Hazel

Chevreuil is a private house rather than a venue, and it behaves like one. Nothing here is arranged for show. The rooms are the owner's own, lived in and warm, and the silence once the gates close is something I have not found anywhere else in my collection.

It is the estate I hand to couples who tell me they want their wedding to feel like a week at someone's house — the ones who would rather fill the hall with thirty-two people they love than a marquee with a hundred and fifty they invited.

Venue hire is from €7,000 for the weekend, exclusive use. What the wedding itself costs on top of that is the harder question, and the one I answer properly.
